Laser Satellite Learning Sessions
- Attendees will learn about the latest technologies and developments that are revolutionizing Free-Space Optical (FSO) communications. Session Length 90 minutes

The concept of using Lasers for communications is NOT a new idea – SIGNAL Magazine published an article in 1975 featuring laser communications devices. Practical experiments using optical lasers for for Space-to-Space and Space-to-Ground communications began in the mid-90s and continue to this day with varying degrees of success – and complexity. There are several advantages “Laser SATCOM” has over conventional Radio Frequency (RF) technologies: higher data rates, increased spectrum availability, and narrow beams that are very difficult to intercept or jam. The advent of practical Laser SATCOM technologies will benefit government defense agencies as well as commercial satellite communication and earth observation operators in all types of satellite orbits (LEO, MEO, GEO, etc.). While many government and commercial satellite operators have already begun to deploy Optical Inter-Satellite Links (OISL) to facilitate in-orbit routing & switching, the prospect of a practical Satellite-to-Ground Laser Communication system promises to revolutionize the global telecommunications environment by providing speeds hundreds if not thousands of times faster than the RF systems used today.
